Supabase and Firebase both give your app a database, user login, file storage and real-time updates without running your own servers. The core difference: Supabase is built on PostgreSQL, a standard relational database you can move anywhere, while Firebase uses Google's NoSQL databases, which are quick to start but harder to query and to leave.

When Supabase is the better choice

  • Your data has relationships: users, orders, teams, bookings, payments.
  • You'll need reporting, admin dashboards or analytics queries.
  • You want to avoid lock-in and keep the option to move.
  • You're building a SaaS or marketplace that will grow in complexity.

When Firebase is the better choice

  • A simple mobile app with mostly real-time or chat-style data.
  • You want Google's analytics, crash reporting and push notifications in one place.
  • Your team already knows Firebase well.

Is Supabase free?

Supabase has a free tier that's enough for prototypes and small MVPs, with limits on database size, storage and activity, and free projects can be paused when idle. Production apps usually move to a paid plan. Firebase's free tier is similar in spirit and switches to pay-as-you-go billing as usage grows. Check both providers' current pricing pages, because limits change.

What we use

Supabase is our default for most client builds, because relational data and easy reporting matter in almost every product that makes money. We still recommend Firebase when an app is simple and mobile-first. Either way, you own the accounts and the code.

A practical example: the same feature in each

Imagine a booking app where you want a report of revenue per trainer per month. In Supabase, that's one SQL query across the bookings, payments and trainers tables, and you can show it in an admin dashboard the same day. In Firebase, NoSQL data is usually duplicated across documents for fast reads, so a report like this often needs extra code, scheduled functions, or exporting data to another tool. Neither is wrong, but the more your business depends on questions like that, the more Supabase pays off.

Costs as you grow

  • Supabase: predictable plan pricing with usage add-ons; costs track database size, storage and bandwidth.
  • Firebase: pay per read, write and download; a chatty app or an inefficient query pattern can raise bills quickly.
  • Both: set spending alerts from the first day, and review usage after launch.
  • Self-hosting Supabase is possible later if you outgrow the hosted plans, which Firebase can't offer.

Questions to answer before you choose

  1. Will you need reports, dashboards or complex filters on your data?
  2. Will your app have a web admin panel as well as a mobile app?
  3. How important is it that you can leave the provider without a rewrite?
  4. Does your team already know SQL or Firebase?
  5. Do you need features from Google's wider ecosystem, such as its analytics and crash reporting?

Frequently asked questions

Is Supabase better than Firebase?

For most business apps with related data, yes. For simple real-time mobile apps, Firebase can be faster to start.

What are good Supabase alternatives?

Firebase, Appwrite, and a managed Postgres database with your own API are the common alternatives, depending on how much control you want.

Can I migrate from Firebase to Supabase?

Yes, but moving from NoSQL to relational data takes planning, so it's cheaper to choose well at the start.
